2021 Demo: When You Are the Scene of the Crime

by Jessi Robertson

backstage exclusive

lyrics

Shuffling through these memories like a stack of Polaroids.
Some are faded yellow-green, some are vibrating with noise.
Flickering at vision's edge, who is that behind my chair?
These images are shapeshifters, melting when they hit the air.

The minute hand clicks to :59.
Every time I tell myself, "I’m fine, I’m fine, I’m fine.”
I’m frozen here, one foot over the line.
Am I? Am I now the scene of the crime?

Everyone’s an expert now. I’ve heard all the remedies
but no one's ever shown me how to manage the extremities.
I can feel the weight of it, looming close enough to touch.
I escape through galaxies, but these universes aren’t enough.

The minute hand clicks to :59.
Every time I tell myself, "I’m fine, I’m fine, I’m fine.”
I’m frozen here, one foot over the line.
Am I? Am I now the scene of the crime?

Painted in strobes of red and blue, photographed and sifted through.
My mouth is dry, my hands are numb. Tell me now what I've become?

The minute hand clicks to :59.
Every time I told myself, "I’m fine, I’m fine, I’m fine.”
I’m frozen here, one foot over the line,
wondering am I? Am I the scene of the crime?
